36 Hours in Honolulu
"Waikiki Beach’s legendary gathering place honoring Hawaii’s great ocean sportsman, Duke Kahanamoku. You'll find beach boys and guests alike with local-style comfort food, Hula Pie, and spectacular sunsets with Diamond Head in view."
"Coco Puffs, a Hawaiʻi classic, only come from Liliha Bakery. Each one is made of three parts: choux pastry, chocolate pudding, and chantilly (which in Hawaiʻi often refers to a frosting made from whipped butter, egg yolks, and sugar, as opposed to whipped cream). Liliha Bakery also happens to double as a legendary diner, serving excellent crisp waffles and butter rolls (ask for yours split and grilled)."
"Address: (3 locations) 580 N Nimitz Hwy, HonoluluHours: 6:30AM-10PM, DailyPrice Range: $$MenuRecommendations: The Waffard, Loco Moco with Fried Rice, Oxtail Soup, Coco Puffs, Poi Mochi Donuts, or Malasadas."
"For a truly outstanding dining experience, from the food and wine to the service and intimate setting, Chef Mavro in Honolulu is the restaurant you and your significant other won't soon forget. The Hawaiian-French fusion restaurant is helmed by owner and chef George Mavrothalassitis who masterfully combines fresh, local ingredients into inventive dishes. Favorites include onaga, a long tail snapper baked in a salt crust with a tomato-ogo-fines herbes sauce, and the house-made lilikoi malasadas with guava coulis for dessert."
"The most honored restaurant in Hawaii, holder of the coveted AAA Five Star and Gayot Three Toques 18/20 rating, Chef Mavro is located at 1969 S. King Street, just a short drive from most Waikiki hotels. Chef George Mavrothalassitis, the holder of the prestigious James Beard award and a founding member of Hawaii Regional Cuisine, specializes in the unique flavors of Hawaii influenced by Chef’s native Provence in France."
"Top rated Chef Mavro is a small, intimate restaurant in Honolulu that features creative and innovative regional cuisine. A popular restaurant for couples, they offer food & wine pairings, as well as prix fixe menus with three, four, and six courses. The chef is known to come out and visit tables on special occasions and they definitely care about service and presentation at Chef Mavro!"
"This place is a Korean karaoke bar that has a lot of soju options and is tolerant of people being pants-shittingly drunk. Come here after you’re done downtown or Waikiki and try some watermelon soju that’s served in an actual watermelon (just don’t try to eat the watermelon, they reuse them. I know, gross). You can also try to rent a karaoke room but unless you’re Korean or know somebody there that’s next to impossible."
"If you ever find yourself passing through Wahiawa, you MUST try this p... Best ever ko chu jang, meat jun & Kim Chee!!!"
"Locally owned and operated, the Aloha Beer Company offers a relaxing place to hang out, feel the saltwater breeze, and sample tasty craft beers, cocktails, and unique pub fare."
"Continuing on Highway 83, make a stop at Kualoa Beach Park for a beautiful view of Mokoli’i, which is also known as Chinaman’s Hat. < Potential add on: Kualoa Ranch offers activities including horseback riding, ATV tour, zipline tour, ancient fishpond and garden tour and a movie site tour. You could easily spend an entire day here taking their tours. The movie site tour may be of particular interest for fans of LOST, Hawaii Five-0, 50 First Dates and Jurassic Park."
"Manana Island, also named Rabbit island, is located ten miles off the Maine shoreline. It is referred to as Rabbit Island mainly for its rabbit's head-like structure and because Jonh Adams Cummins introduced rabbits in the Waimānalo farm. However, the massive destruction they caused to the ecosystem resulted in their eradication."
"From here, you have a great view of the islet Manana Island, also known as Rabbit Island, and Kaohikaipu Island, which is the flatter of the two islets. If your time and interests permit, you might want to take the 1.4 mile (one-way) Makapuu Lighthouse Trail for great views of the lighthouse."
"Pro tip #1: if you’ll be spending 5 days in Oahu, I recommend starting the fifth day with a visit to the Pearl Harbor Museums, followed by either a walking tour of downtown Honolulu (Chinatown, Aloha Tower, Kawaiahao Church, Aliiolani Hale, Iolani Palace, St. Andrew Cathedral and Punchbowl) or a road trip up the more remote west coast of Oahu (Makaha Beach Park and Kaneana [Makua] Cave). Early risers can start with a guided visit to the Honolulu Fish Auction."
"King Kamehameha IV, attracted to the royal Church of England, decided to build his own cathedral and founded the Anglican Church in Hawaii in 1861. The cathedral’s cornerstone was laid in 1867, four years after his death on St Andrew’s Day – hence the building's name. The architecture is French Gothic, utilizing stone and stained glass shipped from England."
"If you’re a history buff or just a fan of the TV show Hawaii Five-O, swing by the famous statue of King Kamehameha (frequently shown in various scenes of Hawaii Five-O). Hawaii was originally a monarchy under King Kamehameha, who was known for uniting all the Hawaiian islands into one nation and ending the conflict that had existed among them. Across the street from the statue is Iolani Palace, the royal residence of the monarch family."
"Choose between Cinnamon’s, Eggs ’n’ Things or Cream Pot for an early morning breakfast, then go for a drive through Downtown Honolulu to take photos at the Kamehameha Statue, Iolani Palace, Kawaiahao Church and the state Capitol. There’s no rush, because you booked your USS Arizona Memorial tour two months in advance for 3 p.m."
"A unique dessert item we tried was snow ice, a mix between shave ice and ice cream that is popular in Taiwan. We drove to Frost City to try it. The area was not great, at least after dark when we were there, but the customer service was wonderfully friendly."
"Tied as my favorite desert on Oahu (with waiola shave ice) Prosody is always a treat. I love taking my family members here and I would 100% recommend it."
"Uncle Clays House of Pure Aloha is another great shave ice shop, and all their ingredients are natural and homemade. What makes this place amazing is their Tahitian Vanilla ice cream. No matter what shave ice flavor your order, the Tahitian Vanilla ice cream pairs well with all the syrup flavors."
"From the name of the restaurant up to its interior, tourists can definitely feel Hawaii’s spirit and culture. Their sumptuous shaved ice is their best seller. This icy cold dessert has different toppings and filled with ice cream."
