A Definitive Ranking of Boston’s Top 5 Cannoli Spots
"The gist: Lastsummer, Puritan & Co. chef Will Gilson made lemonade out of lemons by offering an outdoor preview of his three concept restaurants: Cafe Beatrice, The Lexington, and Geppetto. Both The Lexington and Cafe Beatrice are now officially up and running for in-person and take-out with Geppetto slated to reopen in the fall after showcasing a limited to-go menu over the winter. The food: Cafe Beatrice does all-day pastries, bagels, and sandwiches while The Lexington rounds things out with a heartier menu of seasonally-inspired shareables, soups, sandwiches, and salads plus heft mains like roasted duck and wild mushroom lasagna. The cost: Cafe Beatrice pastries and lunch items $4 - $12; The Lexington starters $3 - $17, soups and salads $14 - $16, sandwiches $16 - $17, mains $23 - $30.How to book: Reserve via Resy ororder take-out and delivery via Toast."
"This new-ish spot from chef and owner Will Gilson is one of three restaurants he and his team have opened at Cambridge Crossing in the past few months. Cafe Beatrice offers a number of bites suited for a brunch spread, including cinnamon rolls; brioche laced with mushrooms and mozzarella, and topped with an egg; and a rueben danish, which is exactly what it sounds like. Cafe Beatrice is currently offering takeout, delivery."
"Jonquil’s Cafe and Bakery has the most geometrically and theatrically designed baked goods in New England (which are every bit as delicious as they look), plus fantastic sandwiches, and teas that bloom dramatically. An artistic “Living Wall” at the cafe’s entrance provides a good idea of the eye-popping treats within. A meal or mid-day treat here is an experience unlike any other on Newbury St."
"For years, Soheil Fathi helped run his family’s successful bakery in Tehran, Iran. After moving to America, though, he had to start from scratch—and incidentally, “made from scratch” also describes the breads and sweets you’ll find at the just-opened, latest incarnation of La Saison in Cambridge. There you’ll find amazing apricot-pistachio and fig-walnut loaves of sourdough; flaky kouign-amann (which is similar to a croissant); feta-za’atar scones; fudgy “marble” brownies with swirls of cheesecake; and crispy crackers spiced with turmeric or smoked paprika."
"La Saison Bakery opened near Fresh Pond in November 2020, but its roots stretch back to 2000 in Tehran, Iran, where Soheil Fathi got his start delivering his mother’s baked goods to local coffee shops. After assisting his mother for many years, Fathi opened a chocolate shop in Tehran (also called La Saison), before eventually arriving in Cambridge. After some time spent working at Flour Bakery, he opened the new incarnation of La Saison with co-owner Sarah Moridpour."
"Pickup is entirely contact-less at Broadway’s on, uh, Broadway. Get your coffee and ricotta square before they close at 2pm."
"While best-known for its cannoli, Mike's is also well-known for the bitter debate that wages among Boston residents over whether they are "Mike's people" or "Modern people." The two bakeries sit on opposite sides of Hanover street, and Mike's churns out piles and piles of cannoli, lobster tails, cream puffs, biscotti, gelato, marzipan, and more. Mike's expanded to Cambridge's Harvard Square in 2014 and will expand to Somerville's Assembly Row in 2017."
"Mike's Pastry is often crowded; lines form at the register and extend onto the street, and for good reason- Mike's makes amazing Italian pastries. King of the cannoli, Mike's makes them in many flavors: ricotta cheese, chocolate cream, chocolate chip, and hazelnut are just a few. If flaky, creamy homemade cannolis don't sound tempting enough, browse the cookie selection, try the sugary-sweet cinnamon twists or order a lobster tail."
"Although there’s an endless debate between whether Mike’s or Modern is better, the truth is that both are delicious. If you’re looking for the true Boston experience, though, we recommend that you go to Mike’s. #SpoonTip: Although there is a location in Cambridge, take the time to head to the Mike’s in the North End."
